The thought of attending an IT certification boot camp can be
intimidating. That’s why it’s essential to be prepared. The greater
the preparation, the greater the advantage you’ll have once the boot
camp begins.
What is a “boot camp”?
The term “boot camp” is a reference to a short,
accelerated period of training. The phrase is appropriate because a
student attending a boot camp will be completely immersed in training
and will have little time for anything else. During a boot camp, there
are no days off and each day will consist of somewhere between 10 to 14
hours of training including after hours study time.
Pre-Boot Camp preparation:
Most training providers send the prospective
student pre-study materials well in advance of the boot camp. While it
may not be possible or even necessary to read through all the materials
you receive, it is important to become familiar with the main
concepts. If the boot camp provider includes a study methodology, it is
of particular importance to follow their instructions precisely.
Although it is possible to attend a boot camp without advance study,
the importance of pre-study preparation cannot be empathized enough.
What is a typical day at a boot camp like?
After an early breakfast, class typically begins
around 8 AM. Except for a break for lunch, class continues
uninterrupted until dinner, usually around 6 PM. Following which,
there is usually 2 to 4 hours of homework in preparation for the next
day.
What are the benefits of attending a boot camp?
The demand for IT professionals is
still very strong. In today’s tight labor market, it is more important
than ever to use every possible advantage to get ahead. An advanced
certification will give you just such an edge. A study conducted by
Fairfield Research and Certification Magazine shows that getting
certified can lead to a 12% increase in salary or close to a $6,000
raise! In fact, the Gartner group recently revealed the following
statistics:
- CompTIA A+ Certification
provides an average of an 11.1% pay increase.
- MCSE Certification
provides an average of a 12.6% pay increase.
- CCNA Certification
provides an average of a 16.7% pay increase.
